Oct. 30, 2015

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  On Thursday night, Lydia Simmon’s game-winning goal against No. 12 Ole Miss assured Vanderbilt a spot in the SEC Tournament.

On Friday, Simmons was rewarded for her clutch goal. The redshirt sophomore was named the SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

Lydia Simmons scored in the 85th minute to lift Vanderbilt to a 1-0 victory over the Rebels on the road. The Londonderry, N.H., native scorched a shot from 22 yards out with her left foot from the left side and into the top left corner off an assist from senior Jamie Kator.

It was Simmons’ fifth goal of the season, which ties her with roommate Simone Charley for most on the team. It was also her second game winner and clinched Vanderbilt’s first trip to the SEC Tournament since 2010. Simmons, SEC All-Freshman a year ago, also has an assist to rank second on the team with 11 points.

The eighth-seeded Commodores (8-7-4, 4-4-3) open the SEC Tournament against No. 9 seed Georgia at 6 p.m. (CST) Monday in Orange Beach, Ala. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
