Quick Slant returns with insights and opinions

Oct. 27, 2015

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

Guilty as charged. We figure there are at least five regular readers of Quick Slant and four of them have recently inquired to see if we’ve been abducted by space aliens since this column has been dormant too long. Rather than offer excuses, we’ll pledge to do better.

Watching the ebb and flow of collegiate sports programs, we continue to marvel at how emotionally high some folks can get in perceived good times and how the good vibes plunge during a downturn. These fluctuations can occasionally be fanned by various “experts” that are, in fact, out of touch or simply wrong in their assessments. Patience in athletics is a virtue in short supply.

Temple’s football team is 7-0 as we write. We’re just sayin’. And for those who gave up our men’s basketball program for dead a couple years ago, we expect the Magic to be back in Memorial this season.

We need to reach 1,000 pre-sold specialty license plates for the State of Tennessee to begin production. We have a ways to go with both the Star V logo plate and the 2014 National Baseball Champions plate. Your pre-order could be the one we need to reach the magic number! Information and ordering info is here.

Another thought from 30,000 feet: it’s natural for people to think their favorite team’s problems are the biggest or maybe the only ones out there. However, when we monitor national sports news, it’s unfortunately safe to say there are some doozies out there that make some of what we fret about almost seem insignificant.

Our baseball team is not only talented, there are some funny guys on the roster. If you haven’t seen the latest “press conference” and need a good laugh, check this one out.
