NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt senior tight end Steven Scheu is a nominee for the Wuerffel Trophy, regarded as the top community service award in college football.

The award is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach and is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel. The Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Semifinalists will be announced November 3 with finalists announced on November 24. The winner will be announced on December 8. Former Vanderbilt long snapper Andrew East was a finalist for the award last year.

This is the latest off-the-field recognition for Scheu, who was recently named a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy and a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.

A native of Evansville, Ind., Scheu will graduate in December with a degree in medicine, health and society and plans to seek an MBA. He is a three-time selection to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and two-time member of the team’s leadership council.

The last two summers, Scheu has completed internships in the Nashville area, working in the accounting and finance departments with Ingram Industries and MediCopy Services, respectively. In the community, Scheu has made regular visits to Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital and actively participated in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He has also volunteered at Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home in his hometown and read to underprivileged children as part of the Upper Room program. This summer, Scheu joined team members to clean up the grounds at a local park.

Scheu is currently tied for third on the team with 16 catches for 174 yards.
