Campbell, Colton continue success on Day Three of All-Americans

Oct. 8, 2015

PACIFIC PALISAIES, Calif. – The No. 1 Vanderbilt Commodores enjoyed another day of success on the West Coast, as VU’s Sydney Campbell and Courtney Colton look forward to competing in the second and third rounds of Riviera/ITA All-American Championship main draw action.

Vandy began Thursday’s competition with Frances Altick playing fellow main draw singles qualifier Breaunna Addison. Addison, an All-American and fierce competitor was quite the matchup for Altick, who continually plays every match like it’s her last. While the score was incredibly close, the Texas Longhorn took the first set advantage, 7-5. Addison continued her success into the next set, sealing her victory with a 6-3 second set victory.

“Frances (Altick) came up just short today against a great ball striker in Breaunna Addison,” said associate head coach Aleke Tsoubanos. “She had some missed opportunities in terms of setting up the points well, but wasn’t quite able to close them out. On the flip side Breaunna played strong tennis from the front and back of court and kept her errors to a minimum so credit to her.”

Altick’s time in California isn’t over, as the senior will begin consolation play tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm CT against LSU’s Joana Vale Costa.

The No. 6 seed, Campbell remains in main draw play after defeating Alabama’s No. 21 Erin Routliffe. The Franklin, Tenn. native secured the first set by coming out on top of a close tiebreaker, 7-6(5). Campbell regained her focus in the second set, holding on to the lead and winning the match 7-6(6), 6-2. Tomorrow the junior plays Stanford’s Taylor Davidson at 1:45 pm CT.

“Great start for Sydney (Campbell) today. They know each other pretty well and it was a back and forth match early with Erin (Routliffe), but Syd found a way to pull out the first set. She played much more disciplined tennis in the second set and was able to cut down on her errors which was great to see.”

The ‘Dores rounded off the day with outstanding doubles play, as No. 4 Colton/Campbell defeated Texas A&M’s No. 14 Deheza/Hristov in a decisive 8-3 victory. In Friday’s third round action, the third-seeded Dores face Pepperdine’s sixth-seeded duo of No. 8 Cutura/Maddox at Noon CT.

“Courtney and Sydney played incredible doubles this afternoon. They were aggressive, but also patient and set each other up well. They are a tough team to beat when they are positive and their energy is high, today it was fantastic.”
