Vanderbilt’s Caroline Pietrzyk has been named the SEC Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week after her historic performance on Saturday at Percy Warner Park.

Competing in the annual Commodore Classic, Pietrzyk posted a time of 17:04.80 while finishing third among the talent-rich field. It was the best performance by a Vanderbilt athlete in the history of Vaughn’s Gap and represented the No. 5 all-time mark at the course, which has served as Vanderbilt’s home course for more than 30 years. Pietrzyk wasn’t the only one who put her name in the Vaughn’s Gap record book at Saturday’s meet. Michigan standout Erin Finn set a new all-time course record with a time of 16:43.40, and second-place finisher Marta Freitas of Mississippi State set the course’s No. 4 all-time mark with a time of 17:02.20.

The Commodores — who held steady in the latest USTFCCCA poll at No. 22 overall and No. 1 in the South Region — travel to South Bend, Ind., on Oct. 2 for the Notre Dame Invitational.
