LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND—Great Britian & Ireland grabbed a 7-5 first day Walker Cup lead over the United States with former Vanderbilt star Hunter Stewart winning one point for the USA.
Stewart, the 2015 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, defeated Ireland’s Paul Dunne, 2-up, by breaking out of an all-square match with wins on the 16th and 17th holes.
The match was exciting with Stewart twice chipping in and Dunne holing out from a bunker.
“There were lots of shots going in the hole,” Stewart said. “The quality of golf was very high. Paul brought out the best in me and brought some good stuff out of him. It’s always fun when that happens.”
Earlier in the day, Stewart and teammate Maverick McNealy dropped a 3 and 2 foursomes match to Ashley Chesters and Jimmy Mullen.
Sunday’s foursome play begins at 8:30 a.m. (local Lancashire time – 2:30 a.m. CDT). Singles play begins at 1:15 p.m. (local time).
