Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
Ever notice how achievers seem to get more done in a day? Our women’s golf team met one day this week at 4 a.m. to go serve breakfast at Nashville’s Rescue Mission. The serving line began at 5:30 and 400 hungry, appreciative people passed through before they finished and returned to campus for morning classes. This is the same team that had a 3.68 cumulative grade point last year and won the SEC title in 2014.
You may not have noticed that Commodore fans living in the state can pre-order one of two specialty car license plates by going on vucommodores.com and clicking the icon midway down the page. There is a Star V logo version and a 2014 Baseball National Champion option. Be sure to read the Q &A before ordering as it contains important information about timelines and state procedures.
Collegiate Licensing Company, our representative with our officially licensed products, reported recently that our royalties were up 32% in 2014-15. The SEC average was 12%. Licensed Vanderbilt gear continues to gain additional shelf space with some major retailer although the cornerstone of our sales continues to be Barnes & Noble at Vanderbilt, one of the leading college bookstores in the nation.
Speaking of annual updates, the SEC Network had its first birthday after enjoying its first year of existence as the most successful network launch in history. It is now available in 50 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. We have been busy preparing for the network’s visit to campus next week to televise the Western Kentucky football game.
