Vanderbilt’s contingent of Derek Mason, Nigel Bowden, Spencer Pulley and Ralph Webb made a quick trip to Hoover, Ala., Monday to participate in the league’s annual SEC Media Days.
The Commodores departed campus a little after 9 a.m. Monday and answered a number of fan questions on the road down via VandyFootball on Twitter. Upon making it to Hoover, the group stopped for lunch at Chipotle to hold themselves over for what was a long day ahead.
After arriving at the hotel, the Commodores changed into their suits. For the second year in a row, someone ran into trouble trying to tie their bow tie. After watching instructional videos, but still not getting it just right, Ralph Webb got an assist from SI’s Andy Staples. As someone who also flaunts a bow tie, Staples got Webb taken care of in a hurry. Last year, it was Staples who assisted Coach Mason with his bow tie. Thankfully, football SID Larry Leathers had Staples on speed dial.
With Webb working on his bow tie, Bowden and Pulley got started with interviews by visiting with some of Nashville’s local media that made the trip to Hoover. The group, including Webb, then made their way to radio row to conduct a number of interviews with stations throughout the Southeast.
Up next was Vanderbilt’s regularly scheduled SEC Media Days appearance which featured stops with a variety of media outlets including CBS, ESPN, SEC Network, Sirius XM, local television affiliates and regional and national writers.
It was a long day, but everyone who took part left impressed by the experience.
“This is the most I’ve ever talked in a day,” Pulley said. “Overall it was a great experience and better than I even expected.”
The media obligations finally came to an end around 5:45 and the Commodores changed out of their suites for the trip back to Nashville. To top the day off, the group stopped at Full Moon Bar-B-Que in Hoover.
