NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Ally Carey will once again be donning the red, white and blue.
The former Vanderbilt three-time All-American was selected to the 2015-16 U.S. Women’s National Team on Sunday after a three-day tryout in Baltimore. She will train with the team in the lead-up to the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s World Cup in Guildford, England.
Carey played in the last World Cup as well, helping the U.S. win a gold medal during the 2013 games. Carey is one of eight players returning who led the U.S. to the world championship in 2013 in Canada.
Carey, a native of Bel Air, Md., is one of the most decorated Commodores in program history. She played at Vanderbilt from 2009-12 and was named a IWLCA First Team All-American her last three seasons. The program retired her No. 2 jersey after she finished her career as the all-time leader in draw controls (263) and ground balls (166). She also sits third in assists (69) and caused turnovers (110).
Carey was one of 36 players named to the team. The team will be whittled down to 18 players before heading over to England in 2017 to vie for a third straight world championship.
Carey wasn’t the only Commodore up at the three-day tryout at Johns Hopkins University. Rising junior attacker Jill Doherty was also invited to try out. It was a huge honor for Doherty, who was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team as a sophomore after ranking third in the league with 23 assists.
