Omaha, Neb. – D1Baseball.com has named Dansby Swanson the National Player of the Year tagging the shortstop and teammate Carson Fulmer first team All-Americans.
Swanson was the top overall pick earlier this week by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the major league draft in the midst of a spectacular season. He is the first Commodore to win national player of the year honors since David Price in 2007.
The Marietta, Ga. native leads Vanderbilt in batting average, runs, hits, doubles, triples and home runs going into the College World Series. Over his last 15 games, Swanson is hitting .361 with 15 extra-base hits, eight home runs, 19 RBI and 19 runs scored to help send the Commodores back to their second straight CWS. The first team All-American honor from D1Baseball and Baseball America give Swanson three first team All-American nods making him the first, first team All-American shortstop in Vanderbilt history and fourth All-American shortstop in program history.
Fulmer picked up two more first team All-American honors, being tagged by D1Baseball and Baseball America. The Lakeland, Fla. native has been a unanimous first team All-American. Fulmer won the SEC triple crown during the regular season leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts to become just the fourth pitcher in league history to accomplish the feat. His 13 wins this season rank second on the all-time last at Vandy. His 152 strikeouts are the third-most in a single-season by a Commodore and most since David Price. Fulmer was the eighth overall pick on Monday by the Chicago White Sox.
Vanderbilt opens play in the College World Series on Sunday night at 7 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton on ESPN2.
