Instead of representing the Black and Gold like they have during their collegiate careers, Hunter Stewart and Matthias Schwab will now face off against each other this weekend at the Palmer Cup, an event named for golfing legend Arnold Palmer which pits the top 10 American collegiate golfers against the top 10 from Europe. The event begins on Friday at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
Stewart, from Lexington, Ky., will represent the United States, while Schwab, from Rohrmoos, Austria, will don European colors this weekend. Stewart was named a first-team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America during the NCAA Championship, only the second Vanderbilt player to be honored on the first team, and was named the program’s first SEC Player of the Year earlier in the spring. Schwab was a first-team All-SEC selection and finished in a tie for 11th at the NCAA Championship in Bradenton, Fla., earlier this month.
The United States leads the all-time series, which dates back to 1997 at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge, by 9-8-1. The European team captured the Cup last year at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England.
Stewart and Schwab’s selections to the Palmer Cup are the third and fourth for Vanderbilt as a program, respectively. Luke List made the United States team in 2006 and 2007, while Brandt Snedeker was selected to the U.S. team in 2003. Schwab becomes the Commodores’ first selection to the European squad.
