Nashville, Tenn. – For the fourth time in five years Hawkins Field will host NCAA Regionals with Radford, Indiana and Lipscomb set to join Vanderbilt beginning Friday.
The Commodores enter the Regional 42-19 and ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Vandy won the Southeastern Conference East division going 20-10 before dropping the SEC Tournament Championship game to Florida last night. SEC Pitcher of the Year Carson Fulmer leads a pitching staff that has struck out 598 batters over 557.2 innings. All-SEC shortstop Dansby Swanson paces an offense that has hit 57 home runs this season after hitting just 22 all of last year.
The Radford Highlanders won the Big South regular season and tournament titles going 20-4 in the league with a 43-14 overall record. Senior Josh Gardiner led the No. 23 Highlanders at the plate with a league-leading .368 average. Michael Boyle led the way on the mound with a 10-2 record and 2.27 ERA.
Indiana went 34-22 prior the Regional going 12-10 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are led by All-Big 10 designated hitter Scott Donley at the dish, who hit a team-best .325. All-Big 10 outfielder Craig Dedelow led the team with six homers. The Hoosiers posted a 3.41 team ERA with closer Ryan Halstead saving 10 games. The Commodores and Hoosiers were paired up last season to face off in the Super Regionals before Stanford upset Indiana in the Bloomington Regional.
Lipscomb makes the short trip across town to join the Regional. The Bisons went 39-18 with a 13-8 record in the Atlantic Sun, winning the A-Sun tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008. Grant Massey leads the way at the plate hitting .351 with 44 RBI. The Bisons pitching staff posted a 3.66 ERA led by Ian Martinez-McGraw, who won seven games to tie for the team lead with freshman Brady Puckett.
The NCAA Nashville Regional will begin Friday at 2 p.m. with Radford taking on Indiana. The Commodores will square off with Lipscomb at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
