Austin bounced from NCAA Singles Championship

May 20, 2015

WACO, Texas – In one of the hardest draws of the 2015 NCAA Singles Tournament, senior Gonzales Austin of the 24th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team was eliminated from tournament competition on Wednesday, falling in his first round match to No. 19 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of the 2015 NCAA National Champion Virginia Cavaliers.

In his last collegiate singles match, Austin, the SEC Player of the Year, fought incredibly hard during his first set against the Cavalier sophomore, but fell in a close 6-4 loss. Kwiatkowski broke away in the second set sweeping the Miami native for the first time this season.

But the four-time All-American’s NCAA journey is far from over as he and Rhys Johnson begin the NCAA Doubles Tournament Thursday afternoon at 2:00 pm CT.

Austin/Johnson have sat in the ITA top 10 since the January rankings were released, and look to make waves for the `Dores. Currently ranked No. 5, with automatic All-American status, the duo squares off against Texas Tech’s No. 22 Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares.
