l COMMODORES COMMAND ATTENTION
With three school records, a long list of personal bests and a point total that almost doubled last year’s effort, the Commodores made plenty of noise at the SEC Championships. On Saturday alone, five individuals — along with the 4×400 team — scored points for the Commodores by earning spots among the Top-8. Vanderbilt finished 11th overall with 25.33 total points after finishing 14th in 2014 with 15 points. The new school records that were set during the meet included:

* Simone Charley in the triple jump with a leap of 43-7;
* Courtney Clayton in the 800 with a time of 2:05.52;
* The VU 4×400 relay team (Faith Washington, Skyler Carpenter, Courtney Clayton and Erin Edmond) with a time of 3:34.74.

l POINTING IT OUT
With her mark of 43-7 in the triple jump, Charley earned a fourth-place finish and scored a team-high five points for the Commodores. Her effort was one of nine point-scoring performances overall. Others who scored for Vanderbilt included:

* Carmen Carlos in the 5000-meter run. Carlos used a late surge to earn sixth place (three points) with a personal-record time of 16:31.48. The time shattered her previous best of 16:39.28 and ranked as the No. 8 mark on VU’s all-time list.
* Courtney Clayton in the 800. Clayton broke her own school record with a time of 2:05.52 in the prelims, and then posted a time of 2:06.62 to finish sixth (three points) in the finals.
* Sara Barron and Katherine Delaney in the 1500. Barron finished fifth (four points) with a time of 4:22.51 and Delaney was eighth (one point) with a personal-best mark of 4:24.55.
* The VU 4×400 relay team comprised of Faith Washington, Skyler Carpenter, Courtney Clayton and Erin Edmond finished fifth (four points) with a time of 3:34.74.
* Vanessa Valentine in the 10000-meter run. Valentine took sixth (three points) with a time of 35:34.41. She also set a PR in the 5000 on Saturday.
* Rebecca Chandler in the Steeplechase. Chandler finished seventh (two points) with a time of 10:35.04. It marked the third consecutive year that she has scored at the SEC meet, and she became VU’s first distance runner to accomplish that feat.
* Sarah Bell in the pole vault. She finished in a three-way tie for eighth place (one-third of a point) by clearing 13-1.75.

l QUOTING THE COACH
Following the meet, Vanderbilt head coach Steve Keith discussed his team’s performance with vucommodores.com. Here’s what he had to say:

On the importance of what his team accomplished:
“To be able to do what we did these past three days was absolutely huge. We want to see the program progress each year, and we certainly feel like this was a big step. … (This) was, hands down, the most competitive we have been at this meet during my time at Vanderbilt.”

On the way the the Commodores closed out the meet Saturday:
“The day started with a school record (Simone Charley in the triple jump) and ended with a school record (the 4×400 relay team) — so that was really big for us. … And virtually everyone who competed for us today scored points. So it was just a really positive day for us in so many ways.”
