NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 4 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team is NCAA tournament bound for the 21st season in a row. The Commodores come in as the No. 4 overall seed in the 2015 NCAA tournament, hosting first and second rounds for the second year in a row.
Vandy plans to build off its recent success after defeating Alabama, Florida and Georgia to claim the program’s first ever-SEC tournament title. Boasting a 19-6 record and a hunger to make it all the way to tournament finals, the `Dores plan to come into NCAAs and do some damage.
Now with the field set, the Commodores look forward to playing the back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference champion, the Murray State Racers. Joining the Racers in Music City is No. 18 Ohio State and No. 41 Oklahoma.
“We’ve got a really good strong regional,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “There’s cool representation all over … we’ve got the Ohio Valley champion, the Big Ten runner-up, and a good team out of the Big 12 in Oklahoma. Tennis fans, we really urge you to come out. It’s going to be a great level of play all weekend. Come and see this team, they’re very good.”
The ‘Dores face the Racers Fri. May 8th at 3:00 pm in NCAA first-round action. Last season VU swept Murray State 4-0 to begin their journey. Leading up to the match, Vanderbilt will continue training rigorously, fueling off the drive and passion which has made them one of the most competitive teams in college tennis.
Last season the squad advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 for the 14th time in school history. Under head coach Macdonald, the `Dores have also enjoyed three trips to NCAA quarterfinals, two semifinals and one tournament final back in 2001.
Following Tuesday’s NCAA selection show the `Dores were honored with a proclamation from the state legislature, playing homage to the squad’s achievements in the 2015 SEC tournament.
“What a wonderful honor and how thoughtful of representative John Ray Clemmons. It’s great for the team to realize their achievement is being honored in the highest level.”
