Trio of Commodores earn BIG EAST weekly honors

April 7, 2015

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Over the weekend, the Vanderbilt lacrosse team notched its first BIG EAST Conference win.

On Tuesday, a trio of Commodores earned their first accolades from their new conference. Caroline Peters was named BIG EAST Attacker of the Week, Alex Duckenfield was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week and midfielder Emma Dagres was selected for the Weekly Honor Roll.

They all played huge roles in Vanderbilt’s 14-8 victory over Temple on Saturday in Nashville. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak, and was the team’s first BIG EAST victory in its first year in the league.

Peters, a sophomore from Rockville, Md., tied career-highs with three goals (on just three shots) and two assists. She also matched a personal-best with five points against Temple. She ranks third on the team with 26 points and nine assists, and fourth with 17 goals. She has six multi-goal games, including three hat tricks, and a point in nine of 12 games this year.

Duckenfield, a senior captain from Rutledge, Pa., had a career day on the back line. She harassed the Owls all day, setting a career-high with five caused turnovers and matching her personal-best with five ground balls. She leads the team with 21 caused turnovers.

Dagres, a junior from Weston, Mass., stuffed the stat sheet with a goal, two assists, three points, a career-high four draw controls and two ground balls. Her 20-yard pass with seven seconds left in the first half set up teammate Jill Doherty for a point blank goal with two seconds before halftime. Dagres, the fastest player on the team, was also charged with defending Nicole Tiernan, who entered the game as the league’s fourth-leading scorer. Dagres shut Tiernan down, holding her to just two goals on nine shots.

The Commodores (4-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) return to action at 2 p.m. on Wednesday when they hit the road to play conference foe Cincinnati.
