DORES HEADED DOWN TO GEORGIA
The Commodores return to Georgia for the first time since their record-breaking 2013 season. Vanderbilt set the SEC record with a 26-3 mark during the league regular season with one of the team’s three losses coming against the Bulldogs in the first game of a doubleheader in Athens. Last season the Dores swept the series at Hawkins Field, outscoring the Bulldogs 29-10. Georgia leads the all time series 105-119.
FULMER, WIEL EARN WEEKLY HONORS… AGAIN
For the second time this season Carson Fulmer and Zander Wiel have earned weekly honors on the same week. Fulmer picked up his second National Pitcher of the Week nod from Collegiate Baseball after punching out a career-best 12 Volunteers last Friday over eight scoreless innings. The leadoff hitter reached third base on two Vandy errors and was the last Tennessee player to pass second the rest of the night. Zander Wiel garnered his second SEC Player of the Week award after going 7-for-15 with eight runs and seven RBI. Wiel helped VU flip the scoreboard at MTSU last Tuesday with a three-run double to cap a seven-run eighth inning and finished the week in grand style with a career-high four hits on Sunday, including his team-leading fifth home run. His five home runs match his team-high from last season. Fulmer and Wiel earned the same honors back on March 2 when Fulmer fanned a then career-high 11 and Wiel hit two grand slams during the week.
LAST FIVE-GAME WEEK
The Commodores play their final five-game week of the regular season this week with a pair of games against Wofford and a three-game series at Georgia. The five-game week is the third of its kind this season for the Dores, who went 5-0 in each of the previous two long weeks. Vanderbilt beat UT-Martin and Western Kentucky and swept Illinois State over the final week of February then beat Quinnipiac twice and Arkansas three times to open SEC play three weeks ago.
ROUND TRIPPERS & OFFENSE UP
Vanderbilt has already surpassed last year’s home run total just 30 games into the season. The Commodores hit 22 home runs as a team in 72 games. Zander Wiel has already matched his team-high from 2014 with five round trippers while Karl Ellison, Dansby Swanson and Rhett Wiseman have all already hit more homers than they did last year. At the midpoint of last year’s regular season the Dores had just seven homers and were hitting .286 as a team while scoring 5.4 runs per game. This year Vandy is hitting .316 and scoring 7.6 runs per game. The upswing in offense has not translated to more wins, however, with the Dores going 22-6 in the first half of last season to match this year’s total.
