Vanderbilt’s bowling team once again joined with hospitality and business leaders to help raise money for people with disabilities. Seven members of the Commodore team, which is headed to the NCAA Championship next week, along with its two coaches recently attended “Bowling for a Cause” sponsored by the Greater Nashville Hospitality Association.

The cause is to give individuals with disabilities a helping hand toward becoming productive members of society through various job training and educational programs.

In its fifth year, Bowling for a Cause raises approximately $5,000 that goes to The Arc – Davidson County and Greater Nashville program for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In turn, The ARC uses the funds to help equip “job coaches”, people who teach the disabled how to successfully do certain tasks that allow them to be hired by area businesses.

“We take pride and have a lot of fun in having a small role in this worthy event,” says Commodore Bowling Coach John Williamson. “Our athletic department emphasizes service to the community and for us, this event represents a very nice fit.”

The bowling team has been honored in the past for having the best combination of academic achievement, athletic success and community service among the school’s 16 varsity sports.

This year’s Bowling for a Cause drew 19 teams, approximately 90 participants, for an enjoyable and productive late-afternoon outing. Many of the participating businesses are from the city’s hotel and restaurant industries.
