No. 10 Vanderbilt heads south to Alabama

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 10 Vanderbilt Commodores swing through to the state of Alabama to this weekend to continue conference action. The `Dores travel to No. 49 Auburn on Friday to take on the Tigers at 2:00 p.m., then take on No. 9 Alabama Sunday in at top-10 showdown.

“Auburn and Alabama are both really great teams,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “We practiced this week with an eye as to how both Auburn and Alabama play. We are a little over half way through conference now, and looking forward to this weekend.”

Last Time out:

The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team remains undefeated at home after two stellar performances last weekend. The Commodores defeated both Missouri and Arkansas by a score of 6-1. With the victories Vandy now owns a record of 11-5 overall, 6-1 in SEC play, and 8-0 at home.

Both matches were solid team performances, with senior Ashleigh Antal winning her 90th career match and senior Marie Casares just three wins shy of her 100th win. In doubles action No. 30 Antal and Astra Sharma remain undefeated, boasting an 8-0 (6-0) record at the No. 2 position.

Scouting the Tigers:

Auburn currently owns an 11-8 (1-6) record. The Tigers have lost their last four matches, most recently getting swept last Friday by Texas A&M, 4-0, and falling to LSU on Sunday 5-2.

Pleun Burgmans is the Tigers sole ranked player, coming in at No. 68 in the latest ITA rankings. In doubles action, Auburn is home to the No. 10 tandem in Burgmans and Emily Flickinger.

Surveying the Tide:

Last weekend Alabama (13-4, 5-3) defeated the LSU Tigers by a final score of 5-2 in Baton Rouge. On Sunday the Tide fell against the Texas A&M Aggies, 4-3, in College Station.

Alabama held its position as the 9th ranked team in the country in the ITA’s latest release. The Crimson Tide boasts three ranked players with Erin Routliffe leading the trio at No. 30. Routliffe is joined in the rankings by Maya Jansen (48) and Danielle Spielmann (66).

In doubles action the Tide have won 15 of 17 opening points thus far on the season. Alabama also has four ranked tandems, with Erin Routliffe and Maya Jansen leading the SEC as the highest ranked tandem at No. 4.
