The NCAA Bowling Committee has selected Vanderbilt to be among the eight programs that will compete for the national championship April 9-11 at the Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis.
The Commodores were the fourth team selected based on performance over the year. The other teams chosen in order of their pre-tournament seeds were Nebraska (1), Fairleigh Dickinson (2), Arkansas State, (3), Central Missouri (5), Sam Houston State (6), Stephen F. Austin (7) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (8).
This marks the 10th consecutive year the Commodores have heard their name called during the selection announcement, among the longest streaks in the country.
“It continues to be a significant accomplishment to make the NCAA’s eight-team field,” Vanderbilt Coach John Williamson says. “Sometimes I get the vibe that it is just assumed we will get a bid because we always seem to have gotten one. Making the field gets harder each year as more quality bowling programs emerge. There were some good teams not chosen today so we are both happy and grateful for the opportunity.”
Vanderbilt’s season was marked by a strong late-season surge, in which it won 30 of its last 36 games en route to a record of 92-38 and a championship in last week’s Southland Bowling League tournament. The Commodores used several lineup combinations over the past month in making their run.
The usual NCAA competition agenda will be in place in St. Louis with team games on Thursday, April 9 used to set a double-elimination Baker bracket that begins April 10.
The national championship game will Saturday, April 11 at 7 p.m. (CDT) and shown live on ESPNU.
