Southland Bowling League Championship

New group, new event: The NCAA is considering a new formula for selecting its national championship field in the next few years and potentially, being a member of a bowling conference could prove to be advantageous. Vanderbilt’s bowling program has been independent since its inception in 2004 but has joined this new league. Six of the eight teams in the group are newcomers to the Southland Bowling League, only Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State are official members of the Southland Conference.

Who is in this league? The five other newcomers include Louisiana Tech, Monmouth, Tulane, Valparaiso and Arkansas State.

Note the difference in title: This is not the Southland Conference Bowling Championship; there is a pointed goal of calling this the Southland Bowling League so as not to confuse the sporting public with institutions who are not fully invented members of the Southland Conference.

Tourney details: The event will be played Saturday and Sunday, March 20-21, on Houston’s Delmar Lanes. The event is a double-elimination, best of seven Baker format identical to the NCAA Championship bracket except that should there be an “if-necessary” match on Sunday it will be played out so that the champion team will be the only team without two losses.

Coach Williamson says: “This is a new tournament for us and it presents a chance to preview the NCAA Championship format and environment. For some on our team it will be the first time they have experienced an elimination format so this will be a good learning opportunity.”
