Nashville, Tenn. – Junior Rhett Wiseman and redshirt freshman Jordan Sheffield each picked up weekly awards for their performances last week.
Wiseman was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week and Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week for his outstanding five-game stretch in the No. 4 Commodores’ perfect 5-0 week. The junior went 10-for-19 (.526) with three doubles, a triple, two home runs, seven runs scored and eight RBI. He posted his fifth straight multi-hit game with his walk-off triple to complete the comeback win from four runs down in the ninth inning vs. Arkansas in Saturday’s SEC opener. Wiseman added three more hits in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader to push his hitting streak to 13 games. The Mansfield, Mass. native leads the Dores in hitting with a .444 average and four homers.
Sheffield was tagged as the TSWA Pitcher of the Week after making his first two career starts and turning in 13 scoreless innings. The Tullahoma, Tenn. native tossed six scoreless innings against Quinnipiac on Tuesday in his first career start to notch his third win of the year. His performance against the Bobcats bought him a spot in the weekend rotation against Arkansas. The redshirt freshman tossed seven more scoreless innings against the Razorbacks on Sunday, matching Arkansas ace Trey Killian zero for zero, before the Commodores walked off with a 1-0 win and the series sweep in the ninth. Sheffield’s seven innings were a career-best and the most by a Vandy pitcher this season. He leads the nation in hits allowed per nine innings, giving up just 2.81 per nine.
Wiseman and Sheffield join Kyle Wright (TSWA Pitcher of the Week), Carson Fulmer (National Pitcher of the Week) and Zander Wiel (SEC and TSWA Player of the Week) as Commodores to earn weekly honors this season.
