Nashville, Tenn. – Juniors Carson Fulmer and Zander Wiel have picked up weekly honors for their performances during Vanderbilt’s perfect 5-0 week.
Collegiate Baseball tabbed Fulmer as one of the National Players of the Week for his start against Illinois State on Friday. The right-hander dominated the Redbirds over six scoreless innings, recording a career-best 11 strikeouts. The Lakeland, Fla. native struck out eight of the first nine batters he faced en route to his second win of the season. Fulmer allowed only one base runner to reach scoring position over his six frames. He is the first Commodore this season to earn a national weekly honor.
Wiel posted a monster week for the Dores to earn co-SEC Player of the Week honors. The redshirt junior from Murfreesboro hit two grand slams during the week, driving in 11 runs while hitting .400 (6-for-15). Wiel’s first career grand slam helped the Commodores complete a comeback victory over Western Kentucky on Wednesday night and his slam on Sunday vs. Illinois State started a rally to erase a 10-run deficit to sweep the series with a 16-10 win. He also matched a career-best with five RBI on Wednesday becoming the first Commodore since 2013 to drive in five runs when he did it in a win at Georgia. The slugger leads the team with two home runs and 15 RBI for the season.
Vanderbilt hosts Evansville tomorrow at 4 p.m. before traveling to Los Angeles to take on No. 4 UCLA, USC and No. 6 TCU this weekend.
