Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
Tim Corbin will be honored next Tuesday night with the Fred Russell Distinguished American Award from the Middle Tennessee chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The award has been presented since 1969 and the list of recipients includes major politicians, country music celebrities and leading citizens. The event occurs at the Music City Sheraton, beginning at 6:00 p.m. With a game against Evansville scheduled to start at 4 o’clock, Coach Corbin has told organizers he will be running a bit late.
One of the rewarding moments in this department is when a senior student-athlete that you have worked with since they arrived on campus stops by to tell you they just landed a great job upon their graduation. In the last couple of weeks, two such Commodores shared their good news with me, one going to work at Price Waterhouse and another with a healthcare internet technology company in a management training program. Of course there are many more such stories every year and they never get old to hear as the excited student-athlete now clearly understands the power of a Vanderbilt degree.
