Head Coach Melanie Balcomb
On the inconsistent play from the team in tonight’s matchup:
“I wish they could sit up here and answer. I don’t have a lot of answers today. They’re a mystery to me. I don’t know how you can play so well at times, just like you’re saying, and then other times I have no idea what they are doing. Just extremely inconsistent. I thought we had it figured out, but we are incapable, right now, of sticking to a game plan for forty minutes. We almost gave up a double-double to a kid who averages 1.6 PPG. We box-and-one on a kid that went six for eleven. Face-guarded her, she wasn’t supposed to touch the ball… She had sixteen points. That’s not our game plan. So, that’s tough, and then we turn it over our average of 21 times. Didn’t get back on transition defense, and let them have run outs. It’s tough; I can’t find five players to communicate together, work together. You know, in spurts one kid will play well and another will play well. Individually we aren’t bad.”
On the development of freshman guard Paris Kea:
“Tonight Paris was Paris. She played great. She was smart. She handled the ball with pressure. This is who I hoped Paris would develop into all season, but it’s good that she figured it out and played so well today. She played as well as you expect a freshman to play under that kind of pressure all night.”
On the development of Sophomore Marqu’es Webb:
“You know, a lot of it is just the commitment. You know, not buying into things off the court as well as on the court, and Marqu’es has made a choice as an individual to buy into all of it. And the only thing that set her back was an injury, and she has played through three injuries. Two knee injuries and a back; she has gotten stronger because of that adversity. We’ve had some other people whose adversity has made them weaker… that ,ade people check out, made people not committed. You have a choice, and Qu’es has made the right choice. So, yeah she is a huge positive as well.”
Vanderbilt Guard Rebekah Dahlman
On how they will pick themselves up and move forward:
“I know we play Tennessee next, big rivals, and we have to focus on them for now and bring it tomorrow for practice. But we need to responsibility of what just happened tonight, and mature as each one of us has to mature and grow. ”
Vanderbilt Guard Morgan Batey
On what the team needs to focus on:
“I think we just have to do a better job individually and as a team. Like Bekah said, maturing and fighting through adversity. As you can see, when we were up in the first half, everything was good, the sun was out, it was 70. But when they started making a run, we kind of broke down. That’s where we’ve been struggling all season, so we have to get better at that. We have to focus on getting stops and getting ourselves back into the game because too many times we just let their runs go on, and we aren’t able to stop it.”
On how this struggle is like a snowball:
“Sometimes it can be a good snowball, we’ve seen that before this season. And we started to kind of snowball today, but we tend to snowball more when it is negative. That’s just part of like what Bekah said, maturing and taking responsibility for your mistakes, for our mistakes and being able to improve on that. When you take responsibility, you are able to make changes and that’s just how it is. We’ve got to make quick changes.”
