Commodore Notes
The Commodores endured a wild week with Wednesday’s scheduled game at Belmont getting rescheduled for April, the Dores’ home series with Illinois-Chicago being canceled and eventually a series with Indiana State in Port Charlotte, Fla. being scheduled… Vanderbilt traveled to the site of the Tampa Bay Rays’ spring training in Port Charlotte, Fla. where the Commodores took two-of-three from the Sycamores… Vandy won the series opener in walk-off fashion thanks to a bases loaded single up the middle from Rhett Wiseman in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 victory… Wiseman drove in all three runs in the win, adding a two-run double to his walk-off single… Ben Bowden picked up his first career win after entering a tied game with the bases loaded and one out, the lefty struck out the first batter and retired the second on a ground ball to earn the victory… A seven-run sixth inning sank the Commodores on Saturday in an 8-1 loss… Hayden Stone took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits and two walks… Zander Wiel led the offense with two hits and drove in the team’s lone run… Three freshmen sparked the Commodores to a series-clinching win on Sunday in a 6-0 blanking of the Sycamores… Freshman Kyle Wright was outstanding in his first career start, turning in six scoreless innings to earn the win while not allowing a runner to reach third base… Fellow freshmen Will Toffey and Jeren Kendall paced the offense… Toffey chipped in a pair of doubles and scored a career-best three runs… Kendall picked up his first two career hits, a triple and a two-run double… The shutout victory was the second in the team’s first six games… Vanderbilt returns to Nashville to host five games at Hawkins Field this week beginning with UT-Martin on Tuesday followed by a Wednesday tilt with Western Kentucky before welcoming in Illinois State for a three-game series this weekend.
