Department volunteers serving Nashville homeless

Feb. 20, 2015

Our department does many good deeds that intentionally go unreported because our student-athletes and staff are doing them for the right reasons and not for a photo opportunity. I thought it was worthy of mention because it’s a team effort that the Athletics Department has been providing six to eight volunteers each month to serve lunch at Luke 14:12 (http://www.luke1412.org/) The group typically car pools to the Room in the Inn complex where it helps serve Nashville’s homeless and hungry.

Good news for DIRECTV subscribers – the SEC has announced the launch of WatchESPN and DIRECTV folks have access to SEC Network television content on computers, smartphones, and tablets anytime, anywhere. In addition, they will have access to the hundreds of digitally exclusive SEC Network + productions.

The Southeast’s massive winter storm has forced our teams to be flexible and creative. The bowlers were stranded in Houston where a three day trip became a week-long due to airport conditions. The baseball team cancelled a weekend home stand and headed to the Tampa area for three games. And thank goodness for the Recreation Center’s great facilities! We’ve had football spring practices in there and our lacrosse team will play games Friday and Sunday in there.

Chew on this one: The youthful men’s basketball team is 0-6 this season in games decided by three points or fewer. If the law of averages gave us a 50-50 split, not unreasonable to think, our 14-12 record would be 17-9 and we’d be in the NCAA Tournament mix. We are not that far away!

Our department extends our deepest sympathy to long-time staffer Brock Williams, whose father passed away earlier this week in North Carolina.
