NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mallory Schonk opened the season with a career day, and she followed that up the very next game with another personal-best performance.
On Tuesday, the BIG EAST Conference recognized Schonk’s hot start by naming her the Attacker of the Week as it released its first weekly conference honors of the season. Schonk scored seven goals, dished out seven assists, collected eight ground balls and caused four turnovers in Vanderbilt’s first two games – a pair of victories over Kennesaw State and Liberty.
In the Commodores’ 24-1 victory over Kennesaw State in the season opener on Feb. 7, Schonk set a career-high with six assists. It marked the second-most assists in a single game in program history. The junior from Perry Hall, Md., also scored three goals for a career-high nine points. In addition, she also set career-highs with four ground balls and three draw controls.
On Sunday in a 20-10 victory against Liberty, the unanimous Preseason All-BIG EAST selection was at it again. Schonk tied a career-high with four goals along with an assist in below-freezing temperatures in Lynchburg, Va. She once again collected four ground balls and also did damage on defense with a career-high three caused turnovers.
Through two games, Schonk leads the Commodores with seven assists and 14 points and ranks second with seven goals and eight ground balls. This is the second such honor for Schonk, who was named the American Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Week after a torrid start last year.
Schonk and Vanderbilt (2-0) return to action at 2 p.m. on Friday when it hosts Boston University at the VU Lacrosse Complex.
