Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings
On tonight’s loss…
“I’m disappointed, but Georgia played better than we did…We didn’t really do anything that was good enough to win the game. I think we played hard, but we didn’t shoot it well enough and they shot it really well. They hit threes and free throws and that’s a recipe for disaster.”
On Georgia’s rebounding edge…
“I thought in the first half it was more of a factor than in the second half. I thought they hurt us on the boards in the first half, but then you look down and see they hit 50 percent from the field in the second half and over 90 percent from the line…you can’t beat anybody like that.”
Vanderbilt Freshman Forward Jeff Roberson
On tonight’s game…
“It’s a tough loss, we got outrebounded and they hit a lot of shots and they got a lot of the misses that they actually had. The first half put us in a hole, and even though in the second half we kind of got a run and rebounded a little better it wasn’t enough. This game was different from the first one because the people who scored in this one were different. In our first game it was [J.J.] Frazier and [Kenny] Gaines who destroyed us, but we kind of limited them tonight, but still other people scored and that was the difference in this game.”
Georgia Head Coach Mark Fox
Opening Statement…
“I’m happy we won the game. I’m glad we don’t have to play Vandy again in the regular season. They’re hard to play against and they’re extremely well-coached. I thought they outplayed us in the first half. I got after our team pretty good during the half because I felt like Vandy was playing a little harder than we were. I thought we were kind of playing cute and falling in love with the three. I also told our team that I don’t think I’ve coached our team very well offensively since we’ve had everybody get hurt. I don’t think we’re playing anywhere near where we can, so some of our turnovers and struggles are my fault. But it’s good to win and beat a team that’s going to win its share of ballgames.”
On the energy that Kenny Gaines brings to the table…
“This is a team. That’s the great thing about this group is that this is a team. We were kind of in a dogfight and Kenny Gaines got competitive and disappointed in himself and answered with two or three really good plays that helped our team. Last game it was J.J. [Frazier] making some plays, Marcus [Thornton] made a couple of big plays today, and Nemy [Djurisic] in the first half. That’s the great thing about this group is that it really, truly is a team and they enjoy being a team.”
On whether or not he feels like the team’s best basketball is still ahead…
“We can play better. I think we can play better. We obviously need to get somebody back and until we do I have got to come up with a little bit more stable of a rotation. Obviously the matchups are different in every game so it’s hard for us to get some consistency offensively because with the matchups that we do have we’re almost subbing defensively, so I think we can get better. I really do.”
Georgia Junior Guard Kenny Gaines
On the team not playing to their potential…
“I feel like we are going to change it. Coach Fox is a good coach. He always leads us in the right direction, so whenever he sees us falter in a certain area, he is sure to pick us up and we get it right.”
On his defense…
“I just want to be a difference maker and help the team in any area. I feel like sometimes I specialize in defense. [Riley LaChance] is a great player. A young, great player, and he’s going to be good for them down the stretch the next couple years. But I feel like we played better team defense. I just like to help the team what ever way I can and it’s exciting to get a defensive stop.”
Georgia Senior Forward Nemi Djurisic
On the team’s free throw shooting…
“We are improving. We weren’t good at free throw shooting in the beginning of the season and it’s won a lot of games lately for us. Free throw shooting is one of the things we have been getting better at. Lately, we’ve known how to finish some games.”
On the team not playing to their potential…
“We haven’t been playing great basketball, and we know that. At Mississippi State, we found a way to win, and tonight, we find a way to win, especially in the second half. Lately, we have been finding ways. It’s always good to win when you don’t play as well. But we’ve got to get back to being good, on defense and offense.”
