The majority of college football fans are rejoicing that the SEC is finally not involved in the national championship football game and there are dozens of ways to analyze the results of the recent bowl games. One could be the role of the longer season and its impact on the student-athletes themselves. Bobby Johnson, despite his success with the I-AA playoff while at Furman, was opposed to a playoff because he saw how injuries impacted the games and results. True. Ohio State’s third-team quarterback was better than Alabama’s stitched up linebacker and secondary corps. With otherwise evenly matched opponents, the team with the fewest major injuries will generally prevail. This is exacerbated as a season deepens. It’s part of the game but it reminds me of the old saw, “it’s not necessarily who you play but when you play them.”
Every member of our No. 5 rated men’s golf team achieved a 3.0 grade point or better during the recently completed semester. And our reigning SEC champion women’s golf team compiled a fantastic 3.63 cumulative gpa with a pair of 4.0’s! That is truly winning both ways. And by the way, our men’s cross country team also had 100% of its roster above the 3.0 mark.
Can it possibly be 25 years ago this March that our men’s basketball team won the NIT Championship? Unbelievably, yes. The guys on Eddie Fogler’s first Commodore team are now middle-aged!
There are exciting days on the horizon. Let’s all have a Happy New Year.
