Vanderbilt and Arkansas State, two of the nation’s traditional bowling powers, had a soft open to their seasons with a non-scoring exhibition Sunday in the bowling center of the Recreation and Wellness Center of Vanderbilt’s campus.
The two teams spent the afternoon working over both long and short oil patterns in Baker and traditional team games.
Vanderbilt Coach John Williamson divided his team in half with a firm strategy in place.
“We wanted to see specific people bowl on certain patterns,” Williamson explained. “You don’t necessarily want to see them compete at their strength, we wanted to evaluate when the lane condition might not be to their strong suit.”
Williamson thought the day was well spent.
“We thought we had a number of bright spots,” he said. “Going in to a day like this you want to see what you have got and learn where you can get better. Since we have an older group we basically knew what we could expect from most of our players. It was nice to see some of the underclassmen do well. I thought Giselle Poss was as good as she could be and also thought Katie Stark for a true freshman came in and competed well.
“Arkansas State is a quality group, a team we hopefully will compete with many Sundays this year. We got to see where they are at and where we are at so it was a very nice barometer.”
Vanderbilt’s season opener is at the Tulane Invitational Oct. 17-19.
