Although the venue was different, Vanderbilt’s SEC opener unfolded very similar to the Commodores’ regular-season opener.
Unable to interrupt the rhythm of Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace, the Commodores suffered a 41-3 loss to the No. 15-ranked Rebels before a crowd of 43,260 at LP Field. Wallace finished 23-of-30 through the air for 320 yards and a touchdown for Ole Miss (2-0, 1-0).
The Commodores — who fell to Temple, 37-7, at Vanderbilt Stadium last Thursday in Derek Mason’s first game as head coach — finished with just 167 yards of total offense against the Rebels.
Ole Miss out-gained Vanderbilt 331-76 in total yards during the first two quarters while racing out to a 20-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the sun briefly broke through at LP Field, but things didn’t get brighter for the Commodores. Vanderbilt surrendered two touchdowns in the first six minutes of the third quarter, and the deficit swelled to 34-0.
Vanderbilt freshman Ralph Webb rushed for 95 on 18 carries.
