NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt women’s tennis sophomore Courtney Colton was honored today as the SEC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week following a stellar performance of the weekend against both Baylor and Texas. This is Colton’s first ever SEC weekly honor.
Colton helped the Commodores to a perfect 2-0 weekend, with wins over No. 18 Baylor and No. 17 Texas.
She clinched the match point against No. 18 Baylor with a big three-set win over Jordaan Sanford at the No. 3 position. The Davie, Fla. native bounced back in the third set, winning 6-4, after getting beat 0-6 in the second. Vanderbilt’s win over the Bears snapped a three-match losing skid.
Against Texas, Colton posted a quick 6-0, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position. Her win came after Texas won three-straight singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. Colton’s win changed the momentum of the match and Vandy won the next two matches to win 4-3.
In doubles play, Colton and Marie Casares went undefeated at No. 2 to improve to 8-1 on the year and 4-1 in dual play.
The Vanderbilt women will get their first action of the year in Nashville this week as they host Memphis on Friday and Pepperdine on Sunday.
