MBB takes on Lipscomb Friday night

The Commodores’ men’s basketball team will play its second game of the 2013-14 season Friday night when Lipscomb ventures across town to Memorial Gym for a 7 p.m. CT tip off. There will be no television for the contest, but a live stream will be available on vucommodores.com as a part of the website’s All-Access package and the radio broadcast can be heard on the Vanderbilt IMG Radio Network and online at vucommodores.com.

Last Time Out

The score of the season opener against Georgia State, who is picked by many to win the Sun Belt Conference in 2013-14. The Commodores shot 55.6% from the floor in the back-and-forth affair Tuesday night at Memorial Gym, a game in which Vanderbilt trailed with five minutes to play and were tied with the Panthers with two minutes to go. Senior Rod Odom and freshman Damian Jones led the Commodores with 19 points apiece, with sophomore guard Eric McClellan adding 18 points in the winning effort. The deciding statistic may have been the Vanderbilt bench, which outscored their counterparts, 28-3.

Stallings On Verge Of Becoming All-Time Vanderbilt Wins Leader

Head Coach Kevin Stallings is now tied with all-time Vanderbilt wins leader and legendary coach Roy Skinner with 278 wins after the Commodores’ victory over Georgia State on November 12. Skinner served as the head coach in 1959 and then from 1962-76. Stallings is also the all-time wins leader at Memorial Gym with 188, and has 401 victories as a head coach.

High Scoring Commodores

The Commodores’ 86-point effort on Tuesday was the team’s highest scoring game since scoring 102 points at Ole Miss on February 16, 2012. Vanderbilt scored 80 points once in 2012-13, and surpassed the 75-point barrier only three times last year.

Commodores Improve Season Opening Mark

Vanderbilt has won seven consecutive openers and are now 80-32 all-time in season openers.

Against the Atlantic Sun

Vanderbilt’s all-time record against current members of the Atlantic Sun Conference is 41-10.

Three-Point Streak Still Alive

Vanderbilt has made a 3-pointer in 866 consecutive games, a streak which began at the inception of the 3-point line in 1986-87. The Commodores rank second only to UNLV for the longest streak in Division I basketball. Vanderbilt, UNLV and Princeton are the only three schools in college basketball to have made at least one 3-pointer in every game played since the 3-point line was implemented.
