After opening the season with a dominating 96-53 victory against Appalachian State Friday, Vanderbilt’s women’s basketball team returns to the court Monday to host Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gym.
Both squads enter the game with 1-0 records after WKU rallied to defeat Austin Peay by three points on Saturday. The Commodores and Lady Toppers have a storied history on the basketball court with 33 previous meetings. Vanderbilt holds a 21-12 series advantage and is 12-3 all-time at Memorial Gym.
The series has dramatically shifted in favor of the Commodores in recent years with Vanderbilt winning seven straight in the series, including a 77-67 victory in Bowling Green last season.
Monday’s game falls on Veterans Day, and Commodore athletic officials are showing their appreciation for active and retired military personnel at the game. All active and retired members of the armed forces can receive free tickets to Monday’s game, but must request tickets by noon on Monday. Email Allison Bradley at allison.bradley@vanderbilt.edu to reserve your tickets.
All veterans will also be honored at halftime of Monday’s game.
Tickets to Monday’s game cost $7 for the general public. Youth tickets (17 and under) are available for $6. More Information
Monday’s game can be heard on 560 AM and 95.9 FM with play-by-play announcer Charlie Mattos on the call. Fans may also watch the game online by subscribing to All Access on VUcommodores.com.
Monday will be the first of three home games this week. The Commodores will also host Delaware State at 7 p.m. Thursday and Marquette at 2 p.m. Sunday.
DAHLMAN SETS RECORD IN DEBUT
Guard Rebekah Dahlman set a freshman record by scoring 23 points in her first-career game against Appalachian State on Nov. 8, 2013. The 23 points were the most by a Vanderbilt freshman in their first career game, topping the previous mark of 22 by Barbara Brackman on Nov. 20, 1981 against Belmont.
COMMODORES PICKED FOURTH IN SEC
When the SEC coaches released their ballots, the Commodores were tabbed for a fourth-place finish in the conference.
Tennessee was predicted to win the conference’s regular-season championship with 167 votes. The reigning SEC regular season champions return three starters from last season’s NCAA Elite Eight squad, including 2013 SEC Player of the Year Meighan Simmons and 2013 SEC Freshman of the Year Bashaara Graves.
Kentucky, LSU, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Georgia rounded out the top half of the league with Auburn, Missouri, Florida, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Alabama rounding out the lower half.
The SEC is expected to be as competitive as ever this season, with as many as six teams earning spots in the top 25 in some preseason polls.
Vanderbilt was picked for a fifth-place finish by the SEC’s media members last month.
