TODAY’S FEATURED PLAYER: Kady Schrann
Jr., Guard, 5-9
Hometown: York, Pa.
If there is one word that describes Kady Schrann’s style of play, it is “active.”
The 5-foot-9 junior is seemingly in perpetual motion whenever she’s on the floor. It’s a trait that serves her well, and enables her to often provide a spark for the rest of her teammates.
With that in mind, it’s easy to understand why last year’s ankle injury, which caused her to miss almost a dozen games, was such a nightmare for her. Schrann found out that sitting on the bench, and not being able to contribute, was extremely tough from a mental standpoint.
Having now recovered from the injury, Schrann is back in business and once again ready to show the energy and intensity that have become her trademarks.
Today, Schrann is our featured player as we continue our Countdown to Tipoff — a two-week preview package that will spotlight a different player or coach each day. Schrann recently sat down for an interview with vucommodores.com to talk about the coming season and a few other topics. Here’s what she had to say:
Q-AND-A WITH KADY
QUESTION: How tough was it to miss some games last season with your ankle injury and to be slowed by it again during the preseason?
KADY: It’s very frustrating (but) I try not to let myself think about it. During the games (last season) was the toughest part; just knowing you could help them, if only you were healthy. It’s actually been a motivational factor for me to get back as quick as I could.
QUESTION: What has been your favorite memory thus far about being a member of the women’s basketball program at Vanderbilt?
KADY: Everyone probably says this, but I think (my favorite thing) is the family atmosphere. The fans, the coaching staff, the girls, our team building and what we all go through together — (those things) are unique, I think, from most schools, especially in the SEC. … My high school team was really close, but nothing compared to how we are here. I love it. It went above my expectations.
QUESTION: Looking ahead, what do you feel is the team’s biggest strength going into the season?
KADY: It’s not anything specific, but just our passion that we have. We can feel it in practice, (and) it’s contagious. You just want to be out there and be a part of it. It carries over into how we play, the energy we have and how we want to come out and stop people right away. (That attitude) reflects the coach, and what she’s helping us to do.
QUESTION: On a normal gameday, what do you do to get fired up? Do you have any superstitions?
KADY: (I don’t have any) superstitions; I don’t believe in them. But I usually just listen to music – anything that I feel like listening to that day. I used (to have certain music for gamedays) but some days, I would be like “I am not really in the mood for this.” So I’d change it (to) whatever song fit for that day and would get me going. Usually not country or slow songs. Usually rap or rock.
