Omaha Challenge – Day 1

Oct. 7, 2013

A grueling first day greeted the Commodores on Day 1 of the 2013 Omaha Challenge as the Dores conquered four events.

First up in the weight room were two events that promised some burn. The team started with 70-pound dumb bells, benching the pair as many times as possible in one minute. The legs were next, in what would prove to be a long day for the players’ lower halves. Each competitor front squatted 155 pounds as many times as possible in 40 seconds.

In the pitchers’ competition Jared Miller topped the crowd with 27 reps in the bench followed by Luke Stephenson (26) and Keenan Kolinsky. On the position player side it was Zander Wiel’s 28 that came out on top followed by John Norwood (26) and Rhett Wiseman (22). Stephenson and Tyler Beede shared the title in the squat competition with 27 reps followed by freshman Jordan Sheffield’s 26 reps. Wiseman was the best in the squat amongst the position players with 29 reps with Dansby Swanson and freshman Nolan Rogers each knocking out 25 reps.

The farmers carry took place next inside Hawkins Field with each player carrying two 45-pound plates 100 yards. The grand finale was indeed grand, as The Crippler made it’s debut. In all out assault on the legs, competitors started with deadlifting 240 pounds 10 times followed by a 60-yard push of a 60-pound sled and 30-yard push of a 200-pound sled. All that just put the players at the half way mark. Competitors then pulled that same 200-pound sled back 30 yards with a rope and finished pushing a 60-pound sled back to the start line.

Jared Miller used his size and strength to win the pitchers’ farmers carry in front of Stephenson and Tyler Ferguson. Wiseman racked up points again with a first place finish among position players with Wiel and Norwood finishing second and third. Brian Miller survived The Crippler the fastest among all the Commodores, finishing the event in 2:54 with Stephenson (2:55) and Jared Miller (2:55) not far behind. Freshman Tyler Green finished first on the position players’ side in 3:02 with fellow freshman Penn Murfee finishing second in 3:10.

Up next on Day 2 of the 2013 Omaha Challenge… lots of running.
