Vanderbilt Director of Athletics David Williams will be honored at the 2013 Sports Law Conference Friday. The event is hosted by the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego.

Williams will receive the Rudolph C. Hasl Leader in Sports Award, given annually to an individual who has exhibited exemplary leadership in sports and then will address the Sports Law attendees.

Williams, Vice Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics and a professor of law at Vanderbilt, has led the university’s athletic department since 2003. During that time, the Commodores have experienced program high-water marks in a wide variety of areas.

Vanderbilt student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 or better grade-point average for seven consecutive years; new facilities affecting every sport have been built or enhanced, fueled largely by private giving; athletic success has included strong finishes in the all-sports Director’s Cup standings while student-athletes have participated in numerous community and even innovative international service projects.

Williams is chair of the NCAA Committee on Infractions and previously helped the Southeastern Conference negotiate its media rights agreements with national networks.
