NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team will hit the road Friday for the first of its final two non-conference games of the 2013 season. The Commodores will face Samford in a Friday night tilt before heading back to the VU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon for a matchup with Georgia State.
Head Coach Derek Greene’s Commodores are coming off a 1-0-1 weekend against No. 23 Wisconsin and Milwaukee. Sophomore Cheyna Williams led the `Dores scoring five goals on the weekend, including two and the game-winner against the ranked Badgers.
Through its first six games this season Vanderbilt (2-2-2) has been getting their fair share of scoring opportunities. The Commodores are ranked third in the Southeastern Conference in shots per game with 18.17, trailing only No. 20 Texas A&M and Georgia.
Williams leads the team in scoring with six goals, however, freshmen Simone Charley and Krystina Iordanou have both made an impact on the offensive side of the ball picking up six points (two goals, two assists) through the first six games of the season.
Scouting Samford
The Bulldogs (3-2-0) welcome the `Dores coming off a 2-0 win over UT-San Antonio last Sunday. Samford has been a tough opponent for SEC opponents thus far, shutting out both Tennesee and Auburn 1-0.
Freshman forward Malcanisha Kelly is the leading scorer the Bulldogs, picking up two goals through her first five games. Kelly’s two goals were both game winners against the Vols and Tigers.
Freshman Katie Peters is the Samford goalkeeper. She has started all five-games this year for Todd Yelton’s team, picking up shut outs in all three of the teams wins.
Scouting Georgia State
The Panthers (0-3-1) will enter the VU Soccer Complex, Sunday, following a Friday night matchup with UT-Martin. Derek Leader’s team is coming off two 1-0 losses last weekend at home against Kennesaw State and Jacksonville.
GSU is 0-1 this season against SEC opponents, falling to Alabama 1-0 in overtime in Tuscaloosa.
Juniors Whitney Ravan and Nikki Fedele have the Panthers offensively thus far; tallying one goal and one assist each. Whitney has gotten the best looks of the two, putting seven of her 11 shots on goal.Georgia State starts freshman Brie Haynes in goal. Haynes has started all four games for the Panthers and is averaging seven saves per game.
