Round one is in the books at the 2013 Carmel Cup, with the Commodores tied for the lead with UNLV with a first-round team score of 363 and sophomore John Voetsch leading all players with a first-round 69.

The first 18 holes, held at Pebble Beach this morning, began at 6:50 Pacific time and concluded around 1:30. The second round is currently underway at Spyglass Hill Golf Course, with the top two teams paired for match play Sunday at Pebble Beach.

Voetsch fired a first-round 69 and leads the tournament after the first round, with teammate Hunter Stewart in a tie for second with a 71. Matthias Schwab shot a first-round 73, Charlie Ewing and Zach Herr each fired 75’s, and Ben Fogler carded a 76 Saturday morning at Pebble Beach.

“There was a heavy fog today that made visibility a little hard at times, but it was a good first round,” said head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Last night we talked about the things we can control and to do our jobs and compete. That’s what we want to be about every time we play. That’s all we talked about last night, and I was proud of how all six guys hung in there today. I’m really proud of John Voetsch, and his effort today is why we like him. You know when he turns in his card, he has given you everything he has. It was a really good start for him, with only one bogey for him. Hunter showed the consistent player that he is with a 71, Matthias shot a solid 73 and was one-under in his final five holes, and the other three guys battled.

“I’m proud of where we are after round one, and I’m excited to go play another great golf course this afternoon and continue to focus on the things we can control, which is to take care of us,” said Limbaugh.

The Commodores and Running Rebels have a 15-stroke lead on third-place Texas Tech, and a 16-stroke lead on fourth-place Arizona.
