The Commodore men’s golf team begins their 2013-14 campaign with a trip to world renown Pebble Beach, Calif., to take part in the third annual Carmel Cup against Texas Tech, UNLV, and Arizona. Vanderbilt will play 36 holes of stroke play at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hills on Saturday, with 18 holes of match play being played on Sunday at Pebble Beach.

“It is always an exciting time when it’s the first tournament of the year, especially when it’s Pebble Beach,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh, who is entering his second season at the helm of the Commodores. “It’s such a special place with great tradition and our guys are really excited about playing there. We want to always give our student-athletes the opportunity to play great competition on great golf courses.”

The Commodores will send senior Charlie Ewing, juniors Hunter Stewart and Ben Fogler, sophomore John Voetsch, and freshmen Zach Herr and Matthias Schwab to the west coast to compete in the tournament.

The four teams will have six players compete, with Saturday’s format counting five of the team’s best scores. Match play will feature the top two teams on Saturday to determine the Carmel Cup Championship, with the third and fourth place teams playing in a third-place match.

“This is an opportunity to learn a lot about ourselves and see where we are as a team,” said Limbaugh. “I am looking to see who is ready to perform on a consistent basis. Those will be the guys that play for us because they are preparing well, staying focused on the job at hand, and being disciplined. Some of our new players played really well in this first qualifier and that is exciting. It will be fun to see how the youth of this team matures and develops. There was a nice foundation built by these guys last year and now it is time to build something new on top of that foundation. This is a new year and a new team with a new identity to be determined.”
