NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt’s Jordan Matthews was named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week by the Tennessee Sportswriters Association (TSWA) for his performance in the Commodores’ narrow 39-35 loss to Ole Miss last Thursday.
Matthews, a senior wide receiver from Madison, Ala., was recognized in the TSWA’s first weekly awards presentation of the 2013-14 academic year.
Matthews caught 10 passes for 178 receiving yards and one touchdown in Vanderbilt’s 39-35 loss to Ole Miss. His 55-yard TD reception in the second quarter gave the Commodores a 14-10 advantage after VU fell behind 10-0 in the first period.
The senior from Madison, Ala., also had a 42-yard catch on 4th-and-18 in the fourth quarter, setting up Vanderbilt’s final touchdown. The 178-yard effort marked a new single-game career high for Matthews and was the most by a Commodore since Earl Bennett set a school record of 223 receiving yards in 2007.
In his last 13 conference games, Matthews has surpassed 100 receiving yards on nine occasions and is averaging 121.6 receiving yards in those 13 SEC contests. The Commodores entertain Austin Peay at 6:30 p.m. this Saturday at Vanderbilt Stadium.
Matthews, a Biletnikoff Trophy and Walter Camp Player of the Year candidate, has 160 career receptions and 2,468 receiving yards. He is on pace to become the SEC’s all-time leader in receiving yardage by the time his Vanderbilt career concludes.
