BROOKLINE, Mass. – Vanderbilt freshman Matthias Schwab has gotten off to a strong start at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Schwab, who has been as high as third in world junior rankings this year, crafted rounds of 71-70 – one over par — to place in a tie for 20th in the huge field of 312 top amateurs competing here. The field was cut to the top 64 and heads into match play beginning Wednesday.
Schwab faces Adam Schenk of Vincennes, Ind.in Wednesday morning. Tee time is 8:50 CDT.Another incoming Commodore freshman, Zach Herr, qualified for the tournament but shot 81-76 and missed the cut.
