STERLING HEIGHTS, Ill. – It was bowling’s version of a cavalry charge as the nation’s best 20-and under women sprinted for a place in Friday’s 16-person match play ladder at the North Pointe Junior Gold tournament.
Two Vanderbilt Commodores – Amanda Fry and Natalie Goodman – reached the final day but much of the excitement fell upon Vanderbilt’s Robyn Renslow, the tourney’s defending champion, who made a remarkable run from way back only to fall just shy.
Fry ended up the 25 games in sixth place, an area she more or less has resided most of the week. The Antelope, Calif., sophomore had a 1,030 block score to end the pin count at +15 for the week.
Goodman, who a year ago won the pin count and in doing so earned a place on Junior Team USA, was red-hot and posted the day’s best block score with games of 205-224-211-278-187 (1,105) to rocket into seventh place, +5 on the week.
Renslow began Thursday in 30th after a shaky start to the week that saw her in the 50’s. On this day, the second-team All-American began 269 and then went 194-159-206-215 to end up just 28 pins behind the No. 16 finisher.
“Robyn had a chance to strike out and be at the cut line,” Vandy Coach John Williamson said. “Her luck went south in that 159 game with three pocket 7-10’s on the left lane. But she made a great run and it was good to see her compete with every shot until it was over.”
Williamson said Fry and Goodman were consistent and expects them to be serious contenders in today’s match play.
