MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Commodores ended their 2011-12 regular season at the Memphis Intercollegiate with a third-place finish after posting a final team total of 901 (311-288-302), with senior Adam Hofmann leading the way for Vanderbilt with a score of 221 (80-68-72), which was good for a tie for fourth.

Vanderbilt’s third-place finish trailed only team champion Kennesaw State, who ended the event with an 892 (299-294-299), and host Memphis, who finished second one stroke back at 893 (296-303-294).

“We were back only two strokes with nine to go, but we hit a hard spot on the golf course,” said Vanderbilt head coach Tom Shaw. “Conditions were tough, but it was a beautiful day and we hung in there and slid into third.”

Hofmann’s fourth-place finish, his second top-five of the season, was capped off by his third-round 73. Sophomore Charlie Ewing carded a top-ten finish with a 223 (80-71-72), his second consecutive top 10 finish and third of the season. Ewing finished runner-up with fellow teammate Will Snipes in last week’s Arkansas State Red Wolf Intercollegiate.

“Hof played well this week, and I’m happy for Charlie Ewing. He’s showed steady improvement all season,” said Shaw.

Freshman Hunter Stewart ended the tournament in a tie for 15th (74-76-75=225), while Trey DelGreco tied for 47th (82-73-82=237) and Snipes in a tie for 52nd (77-80-82).

“Anytime you can get in the hunt, in the final group, the experience you gain you can’t mimic in practice,” said Shaw. “It’s a good learning tool, and the next time we’re in this situation we’ll be better. We’re hoping we get that chance at the SEC Championship next week.”
