The Series – Vanderbilt vs. Tennessee Tech
Despite being separated by just 80 miles of Interstate 40, Vanderbilt and Tennessee Tech will be meeting for the first time since February 27, 1992. The teams met for the first time in 1978-79, playing three times during Vanderbilt’s second season of varsity women’s basketball. The Golden Eagles took all three meetings, one in Cookeville, one in Nashvile and one in Knoxville during the AIAW Tournament. Tennessee Tech went on to take the first seven meetings in the series between 1978 and 1983 before the Commodores finally won at Memorial in 1983. The teams continued to meet annually through 1992, with Vanderbilt winning six of the last nine meetings. Overall, Tennessee Tech leads the series 10-6, however Vanderbilt holds a 5-2 edge on West End. In the last meeting, an 87-59 Commodore win, Heidi Gillingham led Vanderbilt with 17 points, while Misty Lamb contributed 14 points and six rebounds.
