Scouting The Commodores
The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team (3-3) will look to halt a three-game skid when it returns to the friendly confines of Memorial Gym on Wednesday, November 28. The Commodores are led by junior guard Christina Foggie, who is tied for fifth in the SEC in scoring at 15.7 points per game. She led the Commodores with 26 points against Virginia before playing just the first 13 minutes of the Florida State game due to injury. Senior Tiffany Clarke is second on the team at 13.3 points per game, while also contributing a team-high 7.2 rebounds per contest. Junior Jasmine Lister is the third Commodore in double-figures, posting 12.3 points per outing. The trio has been joined in the starting lineup the last two games by senior guard Elan Brown (6.8 ppg/4.8 rpg) and freshman forward Heather Bowe (4.5 ppg/3.7 rpg).
Scouting The Lady Govs
Austin Peay (1-4) makes the short trip to Nashville with their lone win having come against Binghamton. The Lady Govs are led by 12.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game from Leslie Martinez. Meghan Bussabarger contributes 10.2 points per game, while they get 8.6 points from Kristen Stainback and 8.2 points per outing from Nicole Olszewski. APSU is coming off an 0-2 trip to the UTSA Thanksgiving Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. The Lady Govs dropped a 69-67 decision to the host Roadrunners before falling, 88-76, to the Tribe of William & Mary.
The Series – Vanderbilt vs. Austin Peay
Wednesday night will be the 14th meeting between the Lady Govs and Commodores on the hardwood, with Vanderbilt having won all but one contest. Austin Peay took the first meeting in 1977, 81-61, in Clarksville. Head Coach Joe Pepper’s Commodores got revenge with a 75-70 overtime win at Memorial later that season. The series has been all Commodores since. Vanderbilt took 10 meetings over the next decade or so, but the teams did not meet from 1991-2002. Vanderbilt took an 84-50 win in `02 and the Lady Govs did not appear on the slate again until the 2009 Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament, a 95-51 VU victory. The teams met last year in Clarksville for the first time since 1982, with the Commodores taking an 83-51 win behind 25 points from Christina Foggie.
On Deck – Tennessee Tech
Vanderbilt will face an in-state opponent for the second consecutive game when it hosts Tennessee Tech on Saturday, December 1. Tipoff at Memorial Gym is set for 12:30 p.m.
