The No. 16/17 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Southeastern Conference this season by the league’s coaches. The coaches also put two Commodores on the Preseason All-SEC First Team, Christina Foggie and Jasmine Lister. Tiffany Clarke earned Second Team honors.
Vanderbilt accumulated 143 points in the poll, just two behind third-place Texas A&M. The coaches picked Kentucky to win the league (167 points), with Georgia second (149 points). Coaches are not permitted to vote for their own team or players.
Foggie also received three votes for Preseason Player of the Year, which went to Kentucky’s A’dia Mathies with nine votes. Georgia’s Anne Marie Armstrong also received a vote for the league’s top player.
Foggie led the SEC in scoring a season ago, averaging 17.7 points per game and earning First Team All-SEC honors, as well as WBCA All-Region honors. The Mount Laurel, N.J., native also led league in three-point percentage (42.9%) and was second in free throw percentage (83.2%).
Lister led the conference in assists at 5.5 per contest, earning Honorable Mention All-SEC honors. The Corona, Calif., native also led the league in free throw percentage (83.7%), assists during league play (5.3 per game), all while playing the second-most minutes in the league (36.8 per game).
Clarke was a Second Team All-SEC selection by the coaches last year after averaging 11.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game and leading Vanderbilt in field goal percentage (56.6%). The Duluth, Ga., native finished in the top-10 of the SEC in rebounding (fifth), field goal percentage (second) and blocks (10th).
The Commodores, who have been picked anywhere from 10th to 20th nationally in preseason polls, open the regular season on Saturday, November 10, when they host McNeese State. Tipoff at Memorial Gym is set for Noon.
