The Southeastern Conference named a pair of Commodores as weekly award winners with Wesley Johnson earning Offensive Lineman of the Week and Carey Spear being named Special Teams Player of the Week.
For Johnson it is his third such honor in his Vanderbilt career, the most ever by a Vanderbilt offensive lineman. The Nashville native blocked at an 87% grade in the Dores’ 40-0 win at Kentucky on Saturday. Johnson and the offensive line paved the way for 227 yards rushing and 220 yards through the air. The Commodores produced a season-best 29 first downs and converted 11-of-17 third down conversions.
Spear made two field goals in the victory, including a career-best 48-yard kick. The junior is 13-for-16 on field goal attempts this season leaving him three shy of the single-season school record. Spear is a perfect 9-for-9 on kicks less than 40-yards.
Johnson and Spear become the third and fourth Commodores to earn recognition from the league this season. Richard Kent was named Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance at Missouri and Joe Townsend was named Offensive Lineman of the Week for his effort against Auburn.
