Scouting The Commodores
Fans get their first look at a No. 16/17 Vanderbilt team that is locked-and-loaded for 2012-13. The roster has 10 of 11 players returning from last year’s team which won 23 games and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, highlighted by Christina Foggie. The junior guard led the SEC in scoring last year (17.7 ppg) and earned First Team All-SEC honors, as well as WBCA All-Region honors. Her backcourt partner and classmate Jasmine Lister led the SEC in assists (5.5 apg) and earned All-SEC honors, as did senior Tiffany Clarke (7.2 rpg) and redshirt junior center Stephanie Holzer (7.5 rpg). Sophomore Kady Schrann also returns after earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team a year ago. The guard started 27 games.
Scouting The Chargers
UAH enters the 2012-13 season with a preseason ranking of No. 21 at the Division II level, according to Division II Bulletin. Coach Roy Heintz’ Chargers went 23-7 last year, reaching the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in program history. Like Vanderbilt, UAH returns nearly every player this season from a team that was among the top-15 nationally in scoring, 3-point field goals and turnover margin. The top returner is two-time Honorable Mention All-American Jasmine Hammon, who put up 17.2 points per game last year and became the fifth player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark. The Chargers will play three exhibition games against D-1 schools: Middle Tennessee (Nov. 1), Vanderbilt (Nov. 3) and UAB (Nov. 5).
On Deck – McNeese State
Following their lone exhibition contest of 2012, the Commodores will host McNeese State in the regular season opener on Saturday, November 10. Tipoff is set for Noon and the game is part of a doubleheader with the Vanderbilt men’s basketball team, which faces Nicholls State at 3:00 p.m. Fans with tickets for the men’s game are invited to come early and watch the No. 16/17 Vanderbilt women. A men’s ticket will be good for admission to the women’s contest.
